What is the Writing Center?

The Writing Center is a friendly, judgement-free space for all Highline students to get support from with any type of writing. We help student writers strengthen their writing skills through peer collaboration and mentorship.

What kinds of paper do we help students with?

How to make an appointment?

You can schedule an appointment through our online Bookings page, by visiting the Writing Center in person (Building 25, 6th floor), or by calling our front desk at (206) 592-3444.

What’s the maximum hour for each students to work in the Writing Center?

You are allowed to have two 30-minute session per day, up to two hours per week. Once a quarter, you can have a bonus session, for an additional 30 mintues.

What if I made an appointment but cannot make it?

You can cancel you appointment by calling us or cancel it online any time before the session starts.

How can a tutor help me?

A Writing tutors can

  • Become the audience for your paper.
  • Help you work out an organizational strategy.
  • Help you create and focus a thesis or outline.
  • Let you know where you might need more development.
  • Help you identify grammar patterns or common errors.
  • Help you learn to revise and edit your paper.
  • Suggest research resources and techniques.
  • Help you find answers to your questions.

A Writing tutors cannot

  • “Fix” a paper for you — it’s all about working together through the writing process.
  • Work on your paper without you present.
  • Work with you on your writing outside of the Writing Center.
  • Give you answers to homework questions.
  • Give you a thesis to fulfill an assignment.
  • Discuss the grade you might receive on your paper.
  • Write or edit any aspect of your paper for you
