Writing Center Tutor Handbook

This website will serve as a handbook for all Highline Writing Center tutors, whether you’re just beginning or you’ve been here for several quarters. Use the links on the left side of this page to navigate. Here’s some basics:

Writing Center Practicum Class

Every tutor working in the Writing Center will be enrolled in 1-2 credits of the Writing Center practicum class. The class is part an academic study of topics related to consulting and part on-the-job training. You’ll have regular homework and projects. Topics are determined partly by CRLA requirements (see the CRLA Training Topics page) and partly by your interests.

Logistics

Credits

You must be enrolled in at least six credits at Highline per quarter to be eligible for student employment. This includes the practicum class.

For your first and second quarters, you’ll be enrolled for two credits of English 199 per quarter. Each quarter after that, for as long as you work in the Center, you’ll enroll in one credit of English 299. Class enrollment is required for continued employment.

Class meetings

Fridays, 1:30-3:10 in the Writing Center. This schedule is the same from quarter to quarter.
