For Returning Tutors
We are glad you’re still a part of our community! In the left navigation bar, you’ll see some resources about things you’ll be asked to do at some point during your time in the Writing Center.
Your duties as a returning tutor
- Act as a mentor. Co-mentoring is the cornerstone of your work in the Writing Center. Use your strengths to help your fellow tutors use theirs. Answer questions, but ask them, too. Support each other.
- Use your skills and interests to benefit your community. Whether you’re interested in art, marketing, decorating, networking, public speaking, or something else, we have a place for you, and if we don’t have it right now, you are free to create it.
- Step into a leadership role. Leadership can mean a lot of things. You can act as a committee member or committee chair. If you show exceptional leadership skills, you might be asked to be an associate lead. This isn’t a role for everyone, so it’s totally okay to say no, but continue being awesome.
- Be a role model. Less experienced tutors and writers will look to you to know how to behave. Keep a positive mindset and attitude, and conduct yourself accordingly.
- Balance your work, school, and life. We hired you for your ambition and leadership. Too often, though, tutors’ wonderful drive and ambition results in them taking on too much and getting overwhelmed or burned out. To avoid this, focus your efforts where they will be most effective. If you need to cut back your hours, do that. Take care of yourself.
Important resources
- Basecamp. This is a project management tool that several committees use to organize and delegate tasks. If you don’t already have an account, you’ll need to sign up for an account and ask Shon for an invite.
- Google Drive. Use this to store any Writing Center-related material you create. Sign in with your full Highline staff email (as in yourname@highline.edu) and regular campus password. Click on Team Drive. If you don’t see the Writing Center folder there, contact Shon to get an invite.
- Excelsior Online Writing Lab. If you’re looking for a writing- or reading-related resources that we don’t have, look for it here.
